W Trek: Day-by-Day Overview

Most trekkers start at the Laguna Amarga entrance and hike westward. Day 1: Transfer to Las Torres base and hike to Mirador Las Torres β€” the circuit's signature viewpoint, best at dawn. Day 2: Valle del FrancΓ©s, the dramatic hanging glacier valley at the heart of the park. Day 3: Continue to Grey Glacier via Lago NordenskjΓΆld. Day 4: Grey Glacier and the hanging icebergs calving into the lake. Day 5: Return or transfer. The route can be done in either direction; eastbound (refugio-to-refugio) is more common.

O Circuit: What the W Doesn't Show You

The O Circuit adds the remote northern loop: from Grey Glacier you continue north past Paso John Gardner β€” the highest point at 1,241 m, often snow-covered into December β€” to reach the wild Dickson and Los Perros valleys. This section sees perhaps 10% of the W Trek's traffic. The landscape is rawer, the weather more extreme, and the sense of wilderness far greater. The 360Β° view from John Gardner Pass β€” with the entire Southern Patagonian Ice Field stretching to the horizon β€” is one of the great trekking moments on earth.

Accommodation: Refugios vs Camping

Vertice Patagonia and Fantastico Sur operate the refugios and campsites along both routes. Refugios offer bunk beds (bring a liner), hot showers, and meals β€” a significant comfort upgrade. Camping is cheaper but requires carrying a tent and cooking equipment. Many trekkers mix: refuge-to-refuge for social nights, camping in the more scenic spots. The northern section of the O Circuit (Dickson, Los Perros) has very limited capacity β€” these spots book out in the first days after the August 1 release.

Weather & What to Expect

Patagonian weather is legendary in its unpredictability. Four seasons in one day is not a clichΓ© here β€” it is Tuesday. Winds regularly exceed 80 km/h and can make hiking on exposed sections genuinely dangerous. The forecast changes hourly. Waterproofs must be class 3 minimum; anything less will fail. The best strategy is to have no fixed attachment to a particular view or pass on a particular day β€” the trekkers who enjoy Patagonia most are those who accept the weather as part of the experience rather than an obstacle to it.
