About Galápagos Islands

The Galápagos Islands are an archipelago of volcanic islands straddling the equator in the Pacific Ocean, about 1,000 km west of Ecuador. Their extraordinary isolation has produced a unique ecosystem where giant tortoises, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, and sea lions show almost no fear of humans. It was here that Charles Darwin developed his theory of evolution by natural selection, and the islands remain one of the world's premier wildlife destinations.

Best Neighbourhoods in Galápagos Islands

Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz) Main Hub $60–300/night

The largest town in the Galápagos — most services, the Darwin Research Station, and day tours to other islands all operate from here. The best base for land-based visitors.

Live-Aboard Cruise Vessels Best Experience $250–600/night (all-incl.)

Sleeping on an expedition vessel allows visiting multiple islands including the more remote ones inaccessible from land. The definitive Galápagos experience.

Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (San Cristóbal) Alternative Hub $40–200/night

The provincial capital and alternative entry point — quieter than Puerto Ayora with its own sea lion beach (Playa de los Marinos) right in town.

Isabela Island Off the Beaten Path $30–150/night

The largest island and the least visited — penguin colonies, flamingo lagoons, and a fraction of the tourist numbers of Santa Cruz. Highly recommended for a second Galápagos visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Galápagos trip cost? +

All visitors pay a $200 USD national park entry fee on arrival. A 7-night cruise costs $1,750–4,000+ per person all-inclusive. Land-based trips from Santa Cruz cost $100–200/night for accommodation plus $100–200/day for tours.

Is a cruise or land-based trip better for the Galápagos? +

A cruise is better for seeing multiple islands including remote outer islands only accessible by sea. Land-based is more flexible and affordable. For a first visit, a 7-night cruise covering Española, Fernandina, and Bartolomé is strongly recommended.

When is the best time to visit the Galápagos? +

The Galápagos can be visited year-round. June–December (cool season) brings the Humboldt Current with the best snorkelling and marine wildlife. January–June (warm season) has calmer seas, warmer water, and sea turtle nesting.

Do I need a visa to visit the Galápagos? +

The Galápagos are part of Ecuador. Most Western passport holders enter Ecuador visa-free for 90 days. The $200 park fee is paid separately on arrival at the island airport. A Transit Control Card (TCT) must be obtained online before flying.

What wildlife can I see in the Galápagos? +

Giant tortoises, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, waved albatross (April–December), Galápagos penguins, sea lions, hammerhead sharks, whale sharks (June–November), and hundreds of bird species. Wildlife shows almost no fear of humans.
