Choquequirao Trek: The Complete Guide

📖 11 min read 📍 Choquequirao, Peru 🗓 Updated 2026

The definitive guide to trekking to Choquequirao — the Inca citadel larger than Machu Picchu visited by just 30 people per day.

Why Choquequirao?

Choquequirao is the Inca ruin that most of the world has not found yet. Larger in area than Machu Picchu, more dramatically positioned above the Apurímac Canyon, and accessible only by a demanding 4-day return trek — the result is an extraordinary ruin that you will almost certainly have almost entirely to yourself. Around 30 people visit per day compared to 4,000 at Machu Picchu.

The Trek in Brief

The trek begins at Cachora village (2,850m, 4 hours from Cusco by road). Day 1 descends 1,500m into the Apurímac Canyon to the river crossing. Day 2 climbs 1,500m through cloud forest to the ruins. Day 3 is a full day at the site. Day 4 is the return journey. Total: 58km, approximately 9,000m of cumulative elevation change across 4 days.

The Llama Terraces

The most unique feature of Choquequirao — white stone llama figures inlaid into the agricultural terraces on the lower section of the site — are unlike anything found at any other Inca ruin. They were only uncovered in 2004 and are 45 minutes below the main site. Do not miss them.
