Neighbourhoods, beaches, safety tips and the unmissable sights
Planning your first trip to Rio? This comprehensive guide covers everything from the best neighbourhoods to stay in, to safety tips, beaches, and the unmissable sights.
Ipanema is Rio's safest and most desirable beach neighbourhood β boutique hotels, excellent restaurants, and the best beach in the city. Copacabana has more hotel options at every price point and a longer beach, but more tourist hustle. Santa Teresa is the bohemian choice β hillside cobblestones, art studios, and some of the best restaurants in the city (AprazΓvel, Bar do Mineiro). Leblon sits between Ipanema and the lagoon and is the most quietly affluent neighbourhood β excellent if you want a slightly calmer version of Ipanema.
Christ the Redeemer is obligatory β try the van from Santa Teresa rather than the cog railway for a different perspective. Sugarloaf Mountain at sunset delivers one of the great city panoramas on earth. The SelarΓ³n Steps are at their best in the morning light before the tour groups arrive. Tijuca Forest β the world's largest urban rainforest β can be visited in a half-day, with waterfalls and wildlife minutes from the city centre. The Museum of Tomorrow (Museu do AmanhΓ£) in Porto Maravilha is one of the most striking contemporary buildings in South America.
Each beach in Rio has a distinct character. Ipanema's Posto 9 is the LGBT+ area and generally the most relaxed. Posto 8 is popular with locals and surfers. Copacabana is touristy but the sheer spectacle of the 4km arc of beach and the Dois IrmΓ£os mountains behind is worth experiencing. For families, Barra da Tijuca is much calmer and less crowded. Take only what you need to the beach β a towel, water, sunscreen, and a small amount of cash for the vendors. Leave your phone and camera at the hotel.
Rio's crime reputation is exaggerated for tourist areas but not entirely without foundation. The practical rules: use Uber everywhere after dark; do not use your phone while walking on the street; in Copacabana, stay on the beachside of Avenida AtlΓ’ntica after midnight; avoid the Zona Norte unless on a specific excursion. The favela tours offered by Exotic Tours and Favela Santa Marta Tour are legitimate and recommended β they visit communities that have been pacified for over a decade and the insight into Rio's social geography is invaluable.
