The Complete San Pedro de Atacama Travel Guide

📖 11 min read 📍 San Pedro de Atacama, Chile 🗓 Updated 2026

Everything you need to plan a trip to the Atacama Desert — getting there, altitude considerations, the best excursions, and how it compares to Bolivia's Uyuni salt flat.

Getting There

San Pedro de Atacama is reached via Calama, roughly 100km away, which receives multiple daily flights from Santiago (around 2 hours). From Calama airport, shared shuttles and taxis to San Pedro take approximately 1.5 hours. There is no passenger rail service; the shuttle transfer is the standard route for almost all visitors.

Altitude

San Pedro itself sits at a manageable 2,408m, but many excursions climb considerably higher — El Tatio geysers are at 4,320m and several salt-flat lagoons sit above 4,000m. Spend your first day at a relaxed pace, hydrate consistently, and avoid alcohol on arrival. Most tour operators schedule high-altitude excursions for the second or third day to allow for acclimatisation.

Atacama vs Uyuni

Travellers heading to both the Atacama and Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni often ask which to prioritise. Uyuni wins on sheer scale and the mirror effect after rain; the Atacama wins on variety within a single base — geysers, salt lagoons, dune landscapes, and the best stargazing infrastructure in South America, all reachable on day trips from one comfortable town. Many travellers do both, crossing the Bolivia–Chile border directly between the Uyuni tour and San Pedro.

Best Time to Visit

The Atacama can be visited year-round since rainfall is negligible even in the wet season. June to August (Chilean winter) brings the clearest skies and is peak season for stargazing, though nights are cold. December to February is warmer with slightly hazier skies. Avoid late January to February if possible, when the Bolivian altiplano's rainy season can occasionally send flash floods (the "Bolivian winter") into the eastern desert.
