Why Peru and Bolivia Work Together
Peru and Bolivia are natural travel companions — they share the Andean cultural heritage, the altiplano landscape, Lake Titicaca (split between both countries), and a direct overland border crossing at Kasani/Yunguyo that most travellers describe as the most straightforward international land crossing in South America. A 2-week Peru–Bolivia itinerary covers the greatest concentration of extraordinary experiences available in South America per unit of time: Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, the Inca Trail alternatives, Lake Titicaca's floating islands, La Paz's extraordinary urban setting, and the Salar de Uyuni — the world's largest salt flat.
Days 1–2: Lima
Arrive at Lima's Jorge Chávez Airport (international hub for most South American connections). Day 1: Miraflores neighbourhood — Larcomar cliff-side shopping centre, sunset walk along the Malecón. Dinner at one of the Miraflores restaurants (La Mar for ceviche, if budget allows). Day 2: Barranco neighbourhood (Lima's bohemian artistic quarter) and the Larco Museum (pre-Columbian gold collection — one of the finest in the world). Evening flight to Cusco.
Days 3–5: Cusco
Day 3: Arrive Cusco (3,400m). Check in and rest — acclimatisation is mandatory. Gentle walk to Plaza de Armas in the evening, coca tea at the hotel. Day 4: Cusco orientation — Coricancha sun temple (Inca foundations beneath Spanish church), San Blas neighbourhood, covered markets. No strenuous activity. Day 5: Sacsayhuamán fortress above the city (half-day), afternoon in Cusco's museums and restaurants.
Day 6: Sacred Valley
Full-day Sacred Valley tour: Pisac market (morning), Moray agricultural terraces (midday), Maras salt mines (afternoon), overnight in Ollantaytambo. The combination of market, archaeology, and extraordinary salt mine landscape covers the Valley's highlights efficiently while positioning you for the Machu Picchu train.
Days 7–8: Machu Picchu
Day 7: Train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes (1h30m). Afternoon in Aguas Calientes (hot springs, dinner). Day 8: First bus to Machu Picchu (5:30am), Circuit 1 with guide, Sun Gate extension for those with energy, afternoon return to Cusco by train and bus.
Days 9–10: Lake Titicaca Peru Side
Day 9: Bus or tourist bus from Cusco to Puno (6 hours — Peru Rail bus is most comfortable). Afternoon rest in Puno. Day 10: Full day Titicaca boat tour — Uros floating islands (morning) and Isla Taquile (afternoon). The combination covers both the extraordinary engineering of the reed islands and the Taquile textile heritage in a single day.
Day 11: Border Crossing to Bolivia
Tourist bus from Puno to Copacabana via Kasani border crossing (4 hours including crossing). Afternoon in Copacabana — town walk, basilica visit, lakeshore sunset.
Day 12: Isla del Sol
Morning boat to Isla del Sol northern tip (Chincana ruins). Walk south along the island spine (3 hours, 8km) through terraced hillsides and Inca ruins to the southern village of Yumani. Boat back to Copacabana. One of the finest half-day walks in South America.
Day 13: La Paz
Bus from Copacabana to La Paz (3 hours including Tiquina Strait barge crossing). Afternoon in La Paz: Witches' Market (Mercado de las Brujas), Plaza Murillo, cable car (teleférico) over the city at sunset.
Day 14: Uyuni or Fly Home
If extending to 16 days: overnight bus from La Paz to Uyuni (10 hours) for a 2-day salt flat tour before flying home from Uyuni or returning to La Paz for the international connection. If 14 days is the limit: fly La Paz to Lima (2 hours) for the international connection home.
