Getting To Bogotá

Flights, overland routes, getting around locally, and visa requirements for 2026.

Flying To Bogotá

El Dorado International Airport (BOG) is the busiest airport in Colombia and a major hub for South America. Direct services from Miami (4h), New York (5.5h), Madrid (10h), London (via Madrid or Bogotá direct with Avianca), and all major South American cities. Bogotá is the hub for Avianca — Colombia's flag carrier.

  • Miami → Bogotá: 4h direct (American, Avianca, Copa)
  • New York → Bogotá: 5.5h direct (Avianca, United)
  • Madrid → Bogotá: 10.5h direct (Avianca, Iberia)
  • Lima → Bogotá: 3h (LATAM, Avianca)
  • Medellín → Bogotá: 45min domestic (multiple airlines, very frequent)
💡 Tip: El Dorado is 15km from the city centre. Uber is the standard and recommended airport transfer — significantly cheaper than official taxis and safe.

Transport in Bogotá

Bogotá has the TransMilenio bus rapid transit system — extensive but crowded and confusing for first-time visitors. Uber and InDriver are recommended for tourists. The city is very spread out and traffic is heavy; allow extra time for cross-city journeys.

  • Uber/InDriver: safe, cheap, and the standard tourist transport
  • TransMilenio: $0.50/journey — extensive network but challenging to navigate
  • La Candelaria to Usaquén by Uber: $6–10 (25–40 min)
  • Airport to Zona Rosa by Uber: $10–15 (25–40 min)
💡 Tip: Never hail taxis from the street in Bogotá. Always use Uber, InDriver, or taxis arranged through your hotel. This is a firm rule — not a precaution.

Colombia Entry Requirements

Colombia is visa-free for 90 days for most Western nationalities. The country has changed dramatically and is straightforward to enter. There is a small airport tax included in most ticket prices.

  • USA, EU, UK, Australia, Canada: visa-free 90 days (extendable once)
  • Passport: valid for at least 6 months from entry
  • No visa required for most tourism purposes
  • Yellow fever vaccination: recommended (required if travelling to Amazon/jungle areas)
💡 Tip: Colombian immigration officers occasionally ask for proof of onward travel and sufficient funds. Have your return ticket accessible and a credit card visible. In practice this is rarely an issue for Western passport holders.
