Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Carretera Austral? +

Chile's Route 7 — a 1,240km road through remote Chilean Patagonia from Puerto Montt to Villa O'Higgins. Completed in 1988, it passes glaciers, fjords, temperate rainforest, and marble formations. Fewer than 50,000 visitors per year.

Do I need a 4WD? +

Strongly recommended. Most of the route is unpaved gravel and rain can make sections impassable. A 4WD pickup with high clearance and a full-size spare tyre is ideal.

When should I drive the Carretera Austral? +

November to March only. The road is impassable in winter when lodges close and snow blocks passes. November and December offer the best balance of conditions and low crowds.

How long does the full route take? +

A minimum of 10 days from Puerto Montt to Villa O'Higgins and back. Most travellers spend 7-10 days on a partial route covering all major highlights.

What are the marble cathedrals? +

Extraordinary marble formations sculpted by 6,000 years of wave action into caves and cathedrals on the shore of Lake General Carrera near Puerto Rio Tranquilo. A kayak tour is the only way into the innermost caves.
