What Rio Carnival Actually Is
Rio Carnival (Carnaval do Rio de Janeiro) takes place in the days before Ash Wednesday β typically in February, occasionally late January β and is simultaneously several different events. The Sambadrome parade (Desfile das Escolas de Samba) is the televised spectacle: 12 elite samba schools competing over two nights in the SambΓ³dromo, a 700-metre parade runway designed by Oscar Niemeyer, with floats of absurd ambition, 3,000-person dance ensembles, and a scoring system of competitive intensity that Brazilians take extremely seriously. The blocos are something else entirely: free street parties, each organised around a distinctive musical style or neighbourhood identity, taking over entire districts of Rio de Janeiro for days at a time. And then there is the general city-wide party β the hotels, the beach, the bars, and the relentless samba that plays from every speaker from Thursday to Tuesday.
Rio Carnival Tickets: How to Buy
Sambadrome tickets are divided into sectors (camarotes β corporate boxes β and arquibancadas β open grandstand sections). The arquibancada tickets are the authentic experience: standing in the open grandstand among Cariocas who know every school, react to every float, and sing along continuously. Cost: $50β150 for an arquibancada ticket depending on sector and night. Purchase from the official Liesa website (liesa.com.br) which opens sales from October. Sector 9 (at the parade's end, near the judges) and Sector 5 (mid-parade) offer the best viewing. Camarote (corporate hospitality) tickets include food, drink, and covered seating β $300β800+ but a more comfortable experience for those not wanting to stand for 8 hours.
Rio Carnival Blocos Guide
The blocos are arguably more representative of how Rio actually parties than the Sambadrome. Over 500 registered blocos operate during Carnival, each with a specific sound, route, and fan base. The largest β CordΓ£o do Bola Preta (attendance: 2 million), Monobloco, and Simpatia Γ© Quase Amor (Ipanema) β are genuinely enormous. Smaller neighbourhood blocos (Bangalafumenga in Santa Teresa, Escravos da MauΓ‘ in the port area) offer a more intimate experience. Arrive 30β60 minutes before the bloco starts to find a position; leave an hour after it starts if the crowd becomes unmanageable. All blocos are free.
When Is Rio Carnival 2027
Carnival dates change annually as they are fixed relative to Easter (47 days before Easter Sunday). In 2027, Carnival falls February 9β14. The main Sambadrome parade nights are the Saturday and Sunday before Ash Wednesday β these are the tickets to prioritise. The blocos run from the preceding Saturday (10 days of Carnival total, with the official 5-day period at the centre).
Safety Tips and Practical Advice
Carnival safety requires specific precautions beyond normal Rio advice. Leave all valuables at the hotel β no phone, no watch, no jewellery. Carry only the cash you need for the day in a money belt under your clothing. Use Uber from your hotel to the bloco start point and back β street taxis during Carnival apply surge pricing and some are unlicensed. Stay with your group at all times at large blocos β the crowd density makes it easy to lose people. Pickpocketing is the primary crime at Carnival; violent crime against tourists in the main Carnival areas is much lower than the general reputation suggests. The police presence during Carnival is very high.
