The driest desert on Earth — salt flats, geysers, and the clearest night skies on the planet
San Pedro de Atacama is a small adobe oasis town in northern Chile that serves as the gateway to the Atacama Desert, the driest non-polar place on Earth. Within a short drive lie some of the most surreal landscapes in South America: the wind-carved dunes and salt formations of the Valle de la Luna, the flamingo-filled Laguna Cejar and Chaxa lagoons, and the El Tatio geysers, among the highest-altitude geyser fields in the world. Near-zero light pollution and 300+ clear nights a year have made the region home to major international observatories, and stargazing tours here are considered the finest on the continent. Long a niche stop on the Bolivia–Chile salt flat circuit, Atacama has been steadily building its own following as a standalone destination, with a growing roster of design-forward eco-lodges and a 2026 travel calendar increasingly naming it alongside Patagonia as essential Chile.
