The wet season fills the rivers and sends Salto Ángel at full power — the falls are at their most thunderous and the mist plume visible for kilometres. River levels are high enough for comfortable canoe passage to the base. June–October is the sweet spot: high water, manageable rain, and the most dramatic views.
Lower river levels can make the canoe journey to the base longer and more challenging, and the falls may run thinner in a drought year. However, dry season brings clearer skies, cooler temperatures in the jungle, and better conditions for Gran Sabana overland tours. The falls are still visible and impressive; just not at full power.
The combination of full wet-season flow and the best chance of clear mornings (before afternoon cloud builds) makes June–August the most reliable window for both seeing the full fall and getting a photograph. Go to the base camp viewpoint at dawn for the clearest views before the cloud descends.
Paradoxically the wettest months are also the most popular. Afternoon thunderstorms are near-daily but typically short. Morning conditions are often excellent. The falls are at absolute maximum flow. A quality rain jacket and dry bags for your camera are non-negotiable.
