Top-rated attractions, experiences and activities — from iconic landmarks to hidden gems.
These are the experiences most visitors to Carretera Austral rate as unmissable — the highlights that define a trip to this destination.
The Ventisquero Colgante — a hanging glacier suspended between two mountain faces that calves house-sized icebergs into a turquoise lake below. One of the most dramatic glacier viewpoints in Patagonia, accessible by a 1-hour return walk.
Marble formations carved by 6,000 years of wave action into cathedrals, caves, and pillars on the shore of the second-largest lake in South America. The reflected turquoise light inside the caves is one of the most visually extraordinary natural experiences in Chile.
The deepest canyon in Patagonia — the turquoise Río Baker flowing through a gorge of extraordinary scale south of Cochrane. The river confluence where the Baker meets the Nef is one of the most dramatic viewpoints on the entire route.
Natural hot springs accessible only by boat across the Puyuhuapi fjord — a pool of thermal water at the edge of the fjord with views of hanging glaciers and dense temperate rainforest. The most atmospheric hot spring setting in Chilean Patagonia.
The enchanted forest — a short trail through ancient temperate rainforest dripping with moss and lichen, with tree ferns and millennia-old alerce (Patagonian cypress) trees. The most accessible introduction to the Carretera Austral's extraordinary forest ecosystem.
The legendary 4-day ferry journey through Chilean Patagonia's fjord system, connecting Puerto Montt (northern Carretera) to Puerto Natales (gateway to Torres del Paine). One of the great slow-travel journeys of South America.
The Carretera Austral is effectively a one-season destination. November to March (Southern Hemisphere summer) is the only reliable window — long days, reasonable temperatures (15–22°C at lower elevations), and navigable road conditions. Outside this window many lodges close and road sections become impassable mud.
Early summer — spring wildflowers, fewer vehicles on the road, and lower prices than January–February peak. The best time for the self-drive experience. Snow on higher passes has typically cleared.
Peak season — all facilities open, maximum daylight hours (up to 17h at southern latitudes), but the road is busier (a relative term — you may see 20 other vehicles per day) and accommodation books out months ahead.
Autumn colours begin on the lenga beech trees — the oranges and reds of Patagonian autumn are extraordinary. Many lodges begin closing in April. March is still good; April is weather-dependent.
