Best Beaches near Cartagena

Whether you want to surf, people-watch, or find a quiet stretch of sand, here are the top beach options within reach of Cartagena.

🏖️
Playa Blanca, Barú
Day Trip / Iconic · 45min by boat

The most famous beach day trip from Cartagena — a brilliant white sand beach on the Barú peninsula with crystalline turquoise water. Gets very crowded with day-trippers from 11am; arrive early by boat (7am departure) to have the best hours before the crowds arrive. Vendors are persistent but the setting is genuinely beautiful.

💡 Tip: Book a boat tour the night before from the dock near the Old City. Bring cash — everything on the beach is priced for tourists. Consider spending a night on Barú to experience it at dawn before the day boats arrive.
🌊
Islas del Rosario
Snorkelling / Day Trip · 1.5h by boat

A national park archipelago of 27 coral islands with protected waters, excellent snorkelling, and a more peaceful atmosphere than Playa Blanca. The coral has suffered bleaching in recent years but marine life — including turtles, rays, and tropical fish — remains excellent. Several islands have accommodation for overnight stays.

💡 Tip: The standard day tour includes Playa Blanca and one island — worth paying extra for a private tour that spends more time at the islands. Bring your own snorkelling gear if possible; rental equipment quality varies.

When To Visit Cartagena Beaches

☀️
Best (Dry Season)
December – April

Little rain, lower humidity, and the most reliable beach weather. Christmas and New Year bring Brazilian tourists in numbers; reserve accommodation well ahead for December 24–January 8.

Good
July – August

A secondary dry window — warm and mostly sunny. Less crowded than December–April and often better hotel rates.

🌧️
Rainy Season
May – June & Sept – Nov

Rain typically falls in short, sharp afternoon downpours — mornings are usually sunny. Prices drop significantly and the city is quieter and more local-feeling.

🌊
Avoid Sea
October – November

Roughest seas of the year — day trips to the Rosario Islands may be cancelled. The city itself is fine; this only affects boat excursions.
