Cartagena Itinerary 2026

Day-by-day plans for 3, 5, and 7 days — organised to make the most of your time.

Essential Cartagena in 3 Days

Three days covering the walled city, a beach island day trip, and the city's best food and nightlife.

Day 1 Walled City & Getsemaní

Morning: walk the city walls from Torre del Reloj to the Baluarte de Santo Domingo. Visit the Palace of the Inquisition and the Gold Museum. Afternoon: explore Getsemaní's street art and murals. Evening: rooftop cocktails at Café del Mar on the ramparts.

💡 Tip: Wear comfortable flat shoes on the cobblestones and start early before the midday heat sets in.
Day 2 Castillo San Felipe & Rosario Islands

Morning: Castillo San Felipe de Barajas (guided tour of the tunnels). Afternoon: speedboat to the Islas del Rosario for snorkelling — return by sunset.

💡 Tip: Book the island trip through your hotel; the better operators include snorkelling equipment and a local seafood lunch.
Day 3 Local Markets & Sunset Cruise

Morning: Mercado de Bazurto (the chaotic, authentic local market — go with a guide). Lunch: Caribbean seafood at La Cevichería. Evening: sunset cocktail cruise from the marina.

💡 Tip: Bazurto market is an assault on the senses in the best way; hire a local guide who knows the vendors.

Cartagena & the Caribbean Coast

Extends the itinerary to include a night on Playa Blanca and day trip to Mompox.

Day 1 Walled City Deep Dive

Full day in the historic centre: walls, Castillo, Getsemaní. Sunset on the ramparts.

Day 2 Rosario Islands Overnight

Speed boat to a small eco-lodge on the Rosario Islands — snorkel, kayak, and watch the sunset over the Caribbean.

💡 Tip: Only a few lodges are available; book well ahead for the best options.
Day 3 Return to Cartagena — Food Tour

Morning return to the city. Afternoon: guided food tour of the walled city and Getsemaní — fritanga, arepas de huevo, fresh tropical fruit.

Day 4 Mompox Day Trip

A full-day boat and road excursion to Mompox — a perfectly preserved colonial town on the Magdalena River and a UNESCO World Heritage Site almost untouched by tourism.

💡 Tip: The journey is long (4–5h each way) but Mompox is extraordinary; stay overnight if possible.
Day 5 Playa Blanca & Departure

Half-day at Playa Blanca (the best beach near Cartagena) before afternoon transfer to the airport.

💡 Tip: Playa Blanca on Isla Barú is much better on weekdays — weekends bring large day-trip crowds.
