Getting To Choquequirao

Flights, overland routes, getting around locally, and visa requirements for 2026.

Cusco to Cachora

All Choquequirao treks begin at Cachora village, 4 hours from Cusco by road. Shared colectivos depart Cusco's Pavitos terminal to Capachica (change for Cachora) — total journey 4–5 hours. Alternatively, private transfers from Cusco cost ~$80–120 for the vehicle.

  • Colectivo Cusco → Capachica → Cachora: 4–5h, ~$8 per person
  • Private transfer: ~$80–120 for the vehicle (shareable for 4 people)
  • Depart Cusco by 5am to reach Cachora by 10am and begin the trek
💡 Tip: Arrange your Cachora transport the day before departure from a reputable agency in Cusco. Confirm whether they will pick you up from your hotel or if you need to meet at the terminal.

Do You Need a Guide?

The Choquequirao trail is well-marked but a guide significantly enhances the experience — they know the archaeology, the history, and the location of wildlife. Mules are essential for carrying camping equipment on the steep canyon trail. Both are arranged through agencies in Cusco or Cachora village.

  • Guide cost: ~$60–80/day (essential for site interpretation)
  • Mule hire (per mule): ~$20–25/day (each carries ~60kg)
  • Most trekkers hire 1 mule for equipment + food for 2 people
⚠️ Note: Do not attempt Choquequirao without sufficient water (3L minimum per day) and food. There are no supply points on the trail between Cachora and the ruins. Bring a water filter for the river.

What to Expect on the Trail

The trail descends 1,500m to the Apurímac River then climbs 1,500m to the ruins — a total of 3,000m of elevation change in each direction. The canyon section is hot (30–40°C in dry season) and the upper sections are exposed. This is not a casual hike.

  • Difficulty: Strenuous. Good fitness required.
  • Trail surface: Mostly good stone path but loose sections on descent
  • River crossing: Footbridge most of year; can be knee-deep in wet season
  • Weather: Hot in the canyon, cold at altitude (0–5°C overnight at ruins)
💡 Tip: Train specifically for steep descents in the weeks before the trek — the canyon descent puts enormous pressure on knees. Trekking poles are not optional.
