The most popular route into Montevideo is by Buquebus or Colonia Express ferry from Buenos Aires. The direct service to Montevideo takes 2h15m; the Colonia connection (ferry to Colonia del Sacramento + bus to Montevideo) takes 3h total but is cheaper. Book ahead in January–February when ferries fill. Prices from $40–80 USD one way.
Regular long-distance buses connect Montevideo to Buenos Aires (8h via ferry connection), Porto Alegre (12h), and Florianópolis (16h). The terminal is Terminal Tres Cruces in central Montevideo. Comfortable modern coaches with fully reclining seats on overnight routes.
The city centre, Old City, Pocitos, and the Rambla are all walkable or cycleable. Uber operates in Montevideo and is the most convenient option for longer distances. The bus network (STM card) is excellent and very cheap ($0.50/ride). Taxis are metered and reliable. Avoid driving in the city centre — parking is extremely limited.
