Day-by-day plans for 3, 5, and 7 days — organised to make the most of your time.
The most concentrated jaguar-spotting itinerary — 3 nights at Porto Jofre on the Rio Cuiabá, the world's best jaguar viewing location.
Fly to Cuiabá (connections from São Paulo or Rio). Transfer by road (4h down the Transpantaneira dirt road — the drive itself is extraordinary wildlife-watching). Arrive Porto Jofre late afternoon. Briefing from naturalist guide. Evening: first boat safari on the Rio Cuiabá — caiman spotting and the first jaguar search.
Full day on the river in a small motorised boat with your naturalist guide. The Rio Cuiabá corridor is patrolled by known individual jaguars — guides track them by GPS telemetry, fresh tracks, and experience. Multiple daily sightings are common in peak season. Between searches: giant otter family groups, hundreds of caimans, kingfishers, and river birds.
Same pattern as Day 2 — the value of multiple days is significant. Each sighting is different, each jaguar an individual with its own territory and behaviour. Afternoon: option to explore oxbow lakes for giant otters and hyacinth macaws.
Dawn safari before breakfast. Return up the Transpantaneira to Cuiabá. Afternoon flight back to São Paulo or Rio.
A more leisurely stay at a traditional fazenda in the southern Pantanal — horseback riding, birding, and the full Pantanal ecosystem without the jaguar-specific focus.
Fly to Campo Grande (southern Pantanal gateway). Transfer by road to your fazenda lodge (2–3h). Afternoon horseback ride or boat trip.
Morning horseback ride through the floodplain with a pantaneiro cowboy guide. Afternoon birding from the boat. Night: spotlight caiman walk.
Full day on the waterways searching for giant otter family territories, hyacinth macaws at nest trees, and the extraordinary diversity of Pantanal birdlife.
Boat tour of shallow lakes known for giant anacondas (harmless to humans at distance). Evening: 4WD night drive on the fazenda tracks with a spotlight — giant anteater, armadillo, and deer are commonly seen.
Final dawn bird walk or boat trip before transfer back to Campo Grande for afternoon flight.
