Getting To Buenos Aires

Flights, overland routes, getting around locally, and visa requirements for 2026.

Flying To Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires has two airports: Ezeiza (EZE) for international and long-haul flights, and Aeroparque (AEP) for domestic and some regional flights. Direct international services operate from New York (10h), London (14h), Madrid (12h), São Paulo (3h), and all major South American hubs. Ezeiza is 35km from the city centre.

  • London → Buenos Aires: 14h direct (British Airways, Aerolíneas Argentinas)
  • New York (JFK) → Buenos Aires: 11h direct (American, Aerolíneas Argentinas)
  • Ezeiza to city centre: Tienda León bus (~$12, 45min) or taxi/Uber (~$25–35)
💡 Tip: Pre-book a radio taxi from Ezeiza through the official desk inside arrivals — cheaper than kerb-side cabs and safer for first arrivals.

Getting Around Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires has an extensive and inexpensive metro (Subte) system covering the main tourist areas. Bus routes cover the entire city. App-based rides (Uber, Cabify) are legal and widely used. The city is also extremely walkable — Palermo, San Telmo, and Recoleta can all be covered on foot.

  • Metro (Subte): 6 lines, ~$0.15 per ride (buy a SUBE card on arrival)
  • Bus (colectivo): ~$0.15 per ride — extensive network, requires SUBE card
  • Uber/Cabify: widely available; cheaper than traditional taxis
💡 Tip: Buy a SUBE card (transit card, ~$2) at any kiosk and load credit — it works on metro, bus, and regional trains.

Money in Buenos Aires

Argentina's currency situation is complex. The official exchange rate and the parallel ("blue") dollar rate differ significantly. Many businesses accept USD cash and apply their own competitive rate. This is legal for tourist transactions and makes Buenos Aires extraordinarily good value for travellers with strong currencies.

  • USD cash gives the best effective exchange rate at exchange offices (casas de cambio)
  • Credit cards are accepted widely but may use the official (less favourable) rate
  • ATM withdrawals are expensive in fees and limited in amount — not recommended
  • Al cuanto el dólar? (How much for the dollar?) is an acceptable question at any exchange office
⚠️ Note: Do not exchange money at Ezeiza airport — rates are extremely poor. Change a small amount for immediate transport costs and exchange the rest in the city.
