Scalesia Lodge

Intimate highland lodge set within endemic scalesia cloud forest — tortoises on the doorstep

📍 Galápagos Islands, Ecuador Santa Cruz Island highlands, Galápagos

About Scalesia Lodge

The Scalesia Lodge sits within the endemic scalesia forest — the characteristic cloud forest of the Galápagos highlands, named for a native daisy tree found nowhere else on earth. Wild giant tortoises wander through the grounds, Darwin's finches hop between the trees, and vermilion flycatchers flash through the canopy. At roughly half the price of Pikaia Lodge, Scalesia delivers an authentically immersive highland experience with expert naturalist guides and excellent day-trip access to neighbouring islands.

Before You Book

🌫️
Highland Climate

The Santa Cruz highlands are cooler and wetter than the coast — bring a light jacket and waterproof. The garúa mist (light drizzle) is common June–November. The forest is lush and green year-round.

🚤
Island Excursions

All island day trips depart from Puerto Ayora (20 min drive). The lodge coordinates all bookings — Española, Bartolomé, North Seymour, and Floreana are the best day trips from Santa Cruz.

💰
Value

At $280–340/night Scalesia is the best value highland lodge in the Galápagos — significantly less than Pikaia while delivering a genuinely wild and immersive experience.

🎟️
Park Fee

The $200 USD Galápagos National Park fee is payable at the airport in cash (bring USD). This is not included in hotel rates.

Tips from Our Team

Walk the property perimeter at 6am — this is when the giant tortoises are most active and the light is best for photography.
Book the North Seymour Island day trip early — blue-footed boobies and frigatebirds nesting, and the best snorkelling near Puerto Ayora.
Bring binoculars — the vermilion flycatcher is the property's showpiece bird and impossible to miss with good optics.
The lodge can arrange snorkelling and diving at Los Túneles on Isabela Island — one of the best snorkel sites in the Galápagos and worth a day trip.
