Flights, overland routes, getting around locally, and visa requirements for 2026.

Getting To Medellín

Medellín's José María Córdova International Airport (MDE) receives direct flights from Miami (4h), New York (5h30m), Madrid (10h), and major Colombian cities. Bogotá–Medellín is one of Colombia's busiest domestic routes (45 minutes, very frequent). Many budget airlines (Viva, Ultra Air) serve domestic connections.

  • Miami → Medellín: 4h direct (American, Copa, Avianca)
  • Bogotá → Medellín: 45min domestic (Avianca, LATAM, Viva)
  • Airport to El Poblado: 45min by taxi (~$20) or Uber
💡 Tip: Use Uber or InDriver from the airport — significantly cheaper than the official airport taxis and the app-based pricing is transparent.

Medellín's Metro System

Medellín has the only metro in Colombia — a clean, safe, and efficient system covering the main valley floor plus the cable car extensions into the hillside communities. The same card (Cívica) works on metro, cable car, and bus. The system is excellent and covers most tourist destinations.

  • Metro + cable car: ~$0.90 per ride (Cívica card)
  • Uber/InDriver: safe, cheap, widely available
  • Walking: El Poblado, Laureles, and the centre are all walkable neighborhoods
💡 Tip: Load a Cívica card at any metro station on arrival — it works on all city transport and saves time vs buying individual tickets.

Colombia Entry & Safety

Colombia is visa-free for 90 days for most Western nationalities. Medellín's safety has transformed dramatically — El Poblado, Laureles, and the city centre are very safe for tourists. The metro and cable car system are safe at all hours.

  • EU, USA, UK, Australia: visa-free 90 days
  • Medellín is significantly safer than 10 years ago — El Poblado has very low crime rates
  • Use Uber rather than hailing street taxis at night
💡 Tip: The city's reputation lags reality significantly. Exercise the same common sense as any large city. El Poblado is as safe as most major European tourist districts.
