Medellín Itinerary 2026

Day-by-day plans for 3, 5, and 7 days — organised to make the most of your time.

Essential Medellín in 3 Days

Three focused days covering the city's transformation story, best neighbourhoods, and the unmissable Guatapé day trip.

Day 1 El Poblado, Plaza Botero & Metrocable

Morning in El Poblado — the neighbourhood's Parque Lleras, independent cafés, and the Provenza street market. Lunch at a rooftop restaurant with city views. Afternoon: Plaza Botero and the Museo de Antioquia (Botero sculptures and paintings). Late afternoon: Metrocable K or L line to the hillside communities — the views over Medellín at sunset are extraordinary.

💡 Tip: The Metrocable K to Santo Domingo costs the same as a metro ride ($0.90) — one of the world's great cheap viewpoints.
Day 2 Comuna 13 Street Art Tour

Morning: guided street art tour of Comuna 13 — 2–3 hours with a local guide from the community. The transformation from Colombia's most dangerous barrio to a vibrant creative hub is told through the murals themselves. Afternoon: free in El Poblado or Laureles neighbourhood for lunch and independent exploration. Evening: rooftop bar in El Poblado for Medellín's extraordinary sunset.

💡 Tip: The best community guides charge $10–15 as a tip for a 2-hour tour. They are the most authentic and knowledgeable option — far better than organised group tours.
Day 3 El Peñón de Guatapé Day Trip

7am bus from Norte terminal to Guatapé (2h). Climb the 740 steps to the summit of El Peñón — the panoramic view over the reservoir and its islands is extraordinary. Explore the colourful Guatapé town (famous for its zócalos — painted decorative panels on every building). Lunch by the waterfront. Return bus to Medellín arriving by 6pm.

💡 Tip: Combine El Peñón with a 1-hour boat tour of the reservoir — the view of the rock from the water is completely different and the flooded villages below the surface are visible on calm days.

Medellín & The Coffee Region

Extends into the Eje Cafetero (Coffee Region) — one of Colombia's most beautiful and least-visited UNESCO landscapes.

Day 1 Arrive Medellín — El Poblado

Settle in, explore El Poblado. Rooftop sunset. Dinner at a classic parrilla.

Day 2 Comuna 13 & City Deep Dive

Street art tour, Jardín Botánico, Parque Explora science museum.

Day 3 Guatapé Day Trip

El Peñón and Guatapé reservoir as above.

Day 4 Transfer to Salento (Coffee Region)

4-hour bus to Salento — the most beautiful town in the Coffee Region. Afternoon: explore the colourful colonial town and the viewpoint above it. Evening: craft beer and local trout at a Salento restaurant.

💡 Tip: Salento is cold at night (1,900m altitude) — bring a layer. The town is small and beautiful and almost nothing is open before 9am.
Day 5 Cocora Valley — Wax Palms — Return

Dawn hike into the Cocora Valley — the world's tallest wax palm trees (up to 60m) rise from green meadows in a landscape of extraordinary beauty. Return to Salento for lunch then bus to Pereira for a flight back to Medellín or Bogotá.

💡 Tip: The full Cocora Valley loop (5–6h) goes through cloud forest and offers hummingbird encounters. The shorter version (2h return) still gives the iconic wax palm views.
