Getting To Suriname

Flights, overland routes, getting around locally, and visa requirements for 2026.

Getting To Suriname

Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport (PBM), about an hour from Paramaribo, is the main gateway. KLM operates a direct route from Amsterdam (reflecting Suriname's history as a Dutch colony), while other connections run via Miami, Curaçao, and Trinidad.

  • Amsterdam → Paramaribo: direct ~9h (KLM)
  • Miami → Paramaribo: connecting via Curaçao or Trinidad, ~5–7h total
  • Airport to Paramaribo: taxi ~1h, ~$40–50
💡 Tip: The KLM Amsterdam route makes Suriname unusually accessible for European travellers relative to its remoteness — often easier to reach from the Netherlands than from elsewhere in South America.

Getting Around Suriname

Paramaribo itself is walkable. Reaching the interior — Brownsberg, the Central Suriname Nature Reserve, and the Upper Suriname River villages — requires a combination of 4WD roads and river travel by dugout canoe (korjaal), typically arranged through a tour operator or lodge as part of a package.

  • Paramaribo → Brownsberg: ~2.5h by road
  • Paramaribo → Atjoni (river gateway): ~3h by road, then canoe onward
  • Paramaribo → Central Suriname Nature Reserve: light aircraft or long river journey
💡 Tip: Independent car rental works well for Paramaribo and Brownsberg, but the river-based interior trips are far more practical booked through a local operator with existing lodge and boat relationships.

Visas for Suriname

Most nationalities require a Suriname e-Visa or Tourist Card, obtained online in advance or on arrival depending on nationality — check the current requirement for your passport before booking flights, as this differs from most of the rest of South America.

  • Most nationalities: e-Visa required, apply online in advance
  • Some nationalities: Tourist Card available on arrival
  • Yellow fever certificate recommended, required from at-risk countries
⚠️ Note: Do not assume visa-free entry as with neighbouring Guyana or Brazil — Suriname's entry requirements are stricter and should be confirmed with the official Suriname government portal before travel.
