A dawn photography session on the world's greatest natural mirror
A focused, early-morning photography experience — departing Uyuni town at 4am to arrive at the salt flat for the pre-dawn blue hour and sunrise golden light. Your specialist guide knows the active mirror pools (which change with rainfall patterns) and the best angles for the classic perspective tricks and reflection photography. This is the tour for anyone who has seen the photographs and wants to recreate them properly.
Meet your guide at 4am at your hotel. Drive 45 minutes across the flat in the dark, headlights illuminating the white salt crust. Arrive at the active mirror zone before first light — set up for the blue hour photography as the sky begins to lighten. Sunrise follows within an hour — the most extraordinary light of the day. Work the mirror pools for reflection shots, perspective tricks, and creative compositions with your guide's direction. Continue to Isla Incahuasi as the first light hits the ancient cacti. Return to Uyuni by noon.
The salt flat at 3,660m before dawn is cold — typically 0 to -5°C in the mirror season. Bring warm layers including a down jacket. You will warm up once the sun rises.
A wide-angle lens (16–35mm equivalent) is ideal for the mirror shots. A remote shutter release prevents camera shake on long exposures. The blue hour shots require a tripod — bring a small travel tripod. Your guide will suggest compositions.
The mirror effect requires recent rainfall (3–10cm of water on the flat surface) and still air (wind creates ripples). Your guide monitors both conditions. The mirror season is November–March but rainfall is not guaranteed every day.
You will walk through shallow water (5–15cm typically) to reach the best mirror zones. Rubber boots are provided. Bring a change of socks.
