The southern Pantanal at a traditional cattle ranch — horseback safaris, giant otters, and the full wetland ecosystem
The southern Pantanal is the Pantanal of the traditional pantaneiro cowboys — vast cattle ranches (fazendas) that have coexisted with the wetland's wildlife for two centuries. The best fazendas have converted part of their operation to wildlife tourism while maintaining their working ranch identity, and the result is an authentic experience that combines the best of both worlds: expert naturalist guiding and the deep knowledge of guides who have grown up on this specific landscape. Without the intense jaguar-focus of Porto Jofre, the southern Pantanal delivers a broader, more relaxed wildlife experience.
Transfer from Campo Grande by 4WD (2–3h). Arrive at the fazenda, meet your naturalist guide, and settle into your chalet. After lunch: first boat safari on the waterways — introduction to the fazenda's resident giant otter family and the extraordinary caiman density. Sundowner on the observation tower watching the floodplain light change at dusk.
5:30am dawn bird walk — hyacinth macaw flight from roost trees, jabiru storks on the floodplain, and extraordinary diversity in the first light. Breakfast at the fazenda. Late morning: horseback safari through the floodplain with a pantaneiro cowboy guide — the most immersive way to experience the wetland landscape. Night: spotlight walk for caimans, night herons, and giant anteaters.
Morning boat trip to the fazenda's resident giant otter lake — a family of 4–6 individuals with a fixed territory. Giant otters are social, noisy, and extraordinarily charismatic at close range. Afternoon: free time at the fazenda or additional boat safari. Sunset from the 50-metre observation tower — the floodplain stretching to the horizon. Night 4WD drive on the fazenda tracks for giant anteater, armadillo, and maned wolf.
Final dawn activity. Mid-morning: boat search for giant anacondas in shallow oxbow lakes where they bask in the sun. Return transfer to Campo Grande for afternoon flights.
Horses are calm and experienced working animals comfortable with wildlife encounters. Suitable for complete beginners — the guides manage the pace and terrain. Riding through knee-deep water in the flooded sections is a genuinely extraordinary experience.
Giant river otters are the world's largest otter species (up to 1.8m) and one of the Pantanal's most charismatic residents. Fazenda resident families have territories on specific oxbow lakes and are reliably encountered. They are extremely vocal — you will hear them before you see them.
The best fazendas maintain their working ranch identity — you may encounter cattle mustering, fence repair, and the daily rhythms of a working Pantanal ranch alongside the wildlife activities. This authenticity is a feature, not a bug.
The southern Pantanal has lower jaguar sighting rates than Porto Jofre but a broader wildlife experience. Giant otters, giant anteaters, maned wolves, and the spectacular birdlife are all more accessible. The landscape is also more varied — better for horseback exploration.
