The world's great wilderness lodge — perched above Lago Pehoé with the Torres del Paine massif at your door
explora Patagonia is, by any measure, one of the world's great hotels. The lodge perches above the turquoise waters of Lago Pehoé with a direct, unobstructed view of the Paine towers — a panorama of such extraordinary drama that guests routinely describe it as the most beautiful view they have ever experienced from a building. Everything at explora is designed around the guiding philosophy: that the landscape should be the centrepiece, and the lodge should be the perfect base from which to explore it. All-inclusive rates cover all meals, an open bar, and unlimited guided excursions into the national park.
The entry-level room — which is to say, an immaculate 40m² room with floor-to-ceiling windows framing a direct view of the Torres del Paine massif, heated by a wood-burning stove, and appointed with the clean Scandinavian-influenced aesthetic that defines the lodge.
Larger rooms with expanded panoramic windows and a sitting area — the most popular option for couples, offering the complete Paine view in greater comfort.
The hotel's four suites occupy corner positions with 180-degree views of both the lake and the towers. A private terrace, a double-ended bathtub positioned to face the view, and priority excursion booking.
All meals included — a three-course breakfast, packed lunch for excursions, and a sophisticated three-course dinner using Chilean and Patagonian produce. The wine selection (open bar, included) is excellent and heavily focused on Chilean labels.
The lodge bar with its panoramic window wall over Lago Pehoé is the social heart of explora — guests gather after excursions to share sightings over Chilean pisco sours and Argentine Malbec, all included in the rate.
At $700–1,400/night, explora appears expensive. But the rate includes all meals, unlimited guided excursions (worth $150–300/day if purchased separately), open bar, and park entry fees. Compared to booking accommodation, food, guides, and transport separately on the W Trek, the differential is smaller than it appears.
explora operates dedicated transfers from Punta Arenas airport (3h) and Puerto Natales (1h 45min). Transfers must be pre-booked and are included in most packages.
The lodge is exposed to full Patagonian wind — gusts of 80–100km/h are common. The design of the building channels the wind around rather than into the structures, but outdoor activities are sometimes modified based on conditions.
explora books out 6–12 months ahead for December–February. November and March are the recommended shoulder months — slightly cheaper, fewer guests, and conditions often as good or better than peak.
