The only hotel inside Argentine Iguazú National Park — wake to the sound of the falls
The Gran Meliá Iguazú holds the most valuable position of any hotel in Argentina — inside the national park, 1km from the falls, with privileged access before the 6,000 daily day visitors arrive. Guests can walk the boardwalks in near-total silence at 7am, hearing only the roar of the Devil's Throat and the calls of toucans and macaws overhead. The hotel itself is comfortable and well-run, though the location rather than the building is the primary attraction.
Rooms facing the subtropical jungle — comfortable and well-appointed, with sounds of the forest and distant falls. Good value entry point for the in-park experience.
The hotel's premium rooms with direct views towards the falls — morning mist and rainbows visible from the terrace. Worth every dollar for the occasion.
Views over the jungle canopy towards the falls from the restaurant terrace — excellent Argentine beef, Misiones trout, and local Yerba Mate desserts. The best restaurant at the falls.
Cocktails on the jungle terrace as the sun sets over the park — the caipirinhas are excellent and the evening bird activity in the canopy is remarkable.
Park entry (~$25 USD for foreigners) is NOT included in hotel rates — but hotel guests pay only once regardless of how many days they are there, and can access the park at 7am before it opens at 8am.
The mist from the falls is perpetual at the Devil's Throat. Everything gets wet. Pack camera gear in a waterproof bag; wear waterproof shoes.
Coatis (raccoon-like mammals) wander the hotel grounds and are bold around food. Don't leave anything edible on outdoor terraces. Toucans and parrots are visible from the pool daily.
At $320–580/night the Gran Meliá is significantly more expensive than Puerto Iguazú hotels. The in-park location and pre-dawn access justify the premium for anyone who cares about the experience. Budget travellers do fine in town.
