One of the Amazon's most decorated eco-lodges — giant otters, macaw clay licks, and a canopy walkway
The Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica is the most consistently acclaimed eco-lodge in the Peruvian Amazon — a collection of 35 riverside casitas on the Madre de Dios river, surrounded by a private reserve within Tambopata National Reserve. The lodge's naturalist guides are among the most knowledgeable in Peru, the giant otter family that lives on the reserve's ox-bow lake is reliably sighted, and the macaw clay lick at Colpa Colorado is one of the great wildlife spectacles on earth — hundreds of macaws descending at dawn to eat mineral-rich clay.
Beautifully designed casitas on stilts along the river bank — screened windows, good beds, and the sounds of the Madre de Dios as a backdrop. Comfortable and immersive in equal measure.
Casitas adjacent to the lodge's natural pool, slightly more spacious with upgraded bathrooms. Good choice for families.
The lodge's largest accommodation — riverfront position, private deck, and expanded living space. Ideal for photography focused visits requiring early departures.
All meals, non-alcoholic drinks, and guided excursions included in all rates. The restaurant serves excellent Peruvian Amazonian cuisine — ceviche de paiche (Amazon river fish), camu-camu juices, and traditional yuca preparations alongside international options.
The Colpa Colorado macaw clay lick is one of the world's great wildlife spectacles — up to 600 scarlet and blue-and-gold macaws arriving simultaneously. It requires a boat journey and overnight at the observation blind — the lodge coordinates all bookings.
A family of giant river otters (the world's largest otter species at 1.8m) has a permanent territory on the reserve's ox-bow lake. Sighting success exceeds 90% — one of the most reliable giant otter encounters in the Amazon.
Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry to Tambopata. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended. Consult your doctor 4–6 weeks before travel.
June–November (dry season) for best wildlife viewing, easier trails, and lower river levels. The macaw clay lick is active year-round. December–May brings higher water and more photogenic reflections.
