The Numbers

Angel Falls (Salto Ángel in Spanish; Kerepakupai Merú in the indigenous Pemón language) drops 979 metres from the summit of Auyán-tepui — the world's highest uninterrupted waterfall, 16 times the height of Niagara Falls. The water falls so far that in the dry season a significant portion evaporates or turns to mist before reaching the canyon floor — the falls literally disappear into cloud partway down the escarpment. The tepui (table-top mountain) from which it falls, Auyán-tepui, covers 700 square kilometres of plateau at 2,450m altitude — a lost world of endemic flora, carnivorous plants, and geological formations that have been isolated from the surrounding forest for millions of years. It is, by any measure, one of the natural wonders of the world — and one of the most logistically demanding to visit.

How to Visit Angel Falls

The standard approach has two stages. First, fly from Caracas or Ciudad Bolívar to Canaima (a small tourist village at the edge of Canaima National Park) by small propeller aircraft — a 1-hour flight over Gran Sabana grasslands. Second, travel from Canaima by motorised dugout canoe up the Caroní and Churún rivers to the base of the falls — a 4–6 hour journey depending on water levels, through extraordinary jungle scenery with tepui walls rising on both sides. The canoe journey is available only in the wet season (May–November) when water levels are high enough to navigate the rivers. In the dry season (December–April), the falls are best viewed by flyover from Canaima — the water levels are too low for the river journey and the falls themselves are at their thinnest.

Canaima Venezuela Travel Guide

Canaima is a small community on a pink-sand lagoon fed by six separate waterfalls — itself an extraordinary setting quite apart from the Angel Falls experience. The lagoon's distinctive colour comes from the tannins in the river water (the Rio Carrao is a 'blackwater' river, its colour derived from dissolved organic material from the surrounding Amazon Rainforest). Walking behind the Hacha Falls on the lagoon is possible and dramatic. Pemón indigenous guides run all Angel Falls tours from Canaima — the park regulations require guided tours, and the Pemón community's knowledge of the rivers and tepui geography is essential for navigating safely.

Angel Falls Tour Cost

A complete 4-day Angel Falls tour from Caracas costs approximately $400–600 per person including flights to Canaima, river transport, accommodation in Canaima camp lodges, and meals. Independent access is not possible — all visits must be through licensed tour operators based in Canaima or Ciudad Bolívar. The most established operators are Bernal Tours and Jungle Rudy Tours, both with Canaima bases.

Venezuela Travel Context 2026

Visiting Venezuela requires specific preparation that goes beyond standard South American travel planning. Research current conditions before booking through your government's foreign travel advisory. The Canaima region is considerably safer than many parts of Venezuela and has a long history of tourism infrastructure, but travel insurance with emergency evacuation cover is non-negotiable. USD cash is essential — bring more than you think you need, in small denominations. Exchange currency only through trusted tour operators. The extraordinary nature of the destination justifies the additional planning effort for travellers comfortable with complex logistics.
