The Unique Appeal of Cusco Accommodation
Cusco's accommodation landscape is defined by its building stock β a city of colonial Spanish architecture built directly on top of Inca stonework foundations. Several of the finest hotels in the city incorporate intact Inca stonework into their structures: the Belmond Palacio Nazarenas and Inkaterra La Casona both occupy buildings where 15th-century Inca walls are a structural and aesthetic element. Even mid-range hotels in San Blas routinely have colonial courtyards, original wooden beams, and architectural character that a purpose-built hotel in any other city could not replicate. The altitude (3,400m) affects all guests on arrival β the best hotels understand this and have acclimatisation protocols, coca tea stations, and oxygen available.
Luxury Hotels Cusco Historic Centre
Belmond Palacio Nazarenas ($600β1,200/night): The finest hotel in Cusco β a converted palace built on Inca foundations in a privileged position one block from the Plaza de Armas. The only hotel in Cusco with a heated outdoor pool (a significant luxury at 3,400m). The Senzo restaurant is consistently one of the best in the city. 55 suites only β intimate at this scale. The Inca stonework in the courtyard is original. Inkaterra La Casona ($400β800/night): A 16th-century colonial mansion in San Blas β only 11 suites, making it the most intimate luxury option in the city. The building's courtyard is one of the most beautiful private spaces in Cusco, and the service is exceptionally personal at this scale. Palacio del Inka β a Luxury Collection Hotel ($350β700/night): A colonial palace with Inca stonework foundations, a central location near Qorikancha, and strong Marriott Luxury Collection service standards. More accessible than Belmond but slightly less distinctive.
Best Hotels Cusco Historic Centre: Mid-Range
Tierra Viva Cusco Saphi ($80β130/night): The best mid-range hotel in San Blas β beautifully decorated with Andean textiles, excellent included breakfast, rooftop terrace, and genuinely warm service. An outstanding step up from hostel accommodation at a very reasonable price. Hotel Monasterio ($200β400/night): A 16th-century seminary converted by Belmond β the courtyard cedar tree is 300 years old and the chapel ceiling is painted with CusqueΓ±o School art. Good value at the lower end of its rate range. Casa Cartagena Boutique Hotel ($150β280/night): A colonial house near the Plaza de Armas with an excellent spa (one of the better hotel spas in the city β useful for altitude recovery) and well-appointed rooms.
Budget Guesthouses Cusco
The San Blas neighbourhood has the best budget accommodation in the city. Hostal Tikawasi, Hostal Rumi Punku, and El Mercado Bed & Breakfast all offer private rooms from $35β60 with good service and colonial-building character. The Loki and Pariwana hostels (see our Cusco hostel guide) are the best social hostels for dorm travellers. Key advice for all Cusco accommodation: ensure your room has adequate heating β temperatures drop below 5Β°C at night year-round at 3,400m altitude, and cold rooms cause poor sleep that exacerbates altitude sickness symptoms. Many visitors are staying in Cusco as their base for visiting Machu Picchu.
